It is a form of communication and the poet alone can say if such aim is achieved at the end of the day. Consider when one has the aim of inspiring an audience. Conventionally, it is normal to adopt a common frame of reference that the audience can relate to. This will generally evoke an emotional response from them.

  5. Use metaphor and simile
  6. Use concrete instead of abstract words
  7. Communicate theme
  8. Subvert the ordinary
  9. Rhyme with extreme caution
  10. Revise, revise and revise

  1. Know your goal: Clearly distinguishing the goal whether to engage the audience in a protect against social injustice, explore personal experience or describe the beauty of nature, it must be well defined from the beginning

  1. Avoid Cliches: These are often used and common words or phrases. It may also be usual plot, pattern of doing things which will only detract from the audience. Originality is very important in this area and everyone would want to associate with such. Creative is the watchword; the poet should endeavor to distinguish self in this area as to be original enough for a good public appeal.

  1. Avoid Sentimentality: This is an appeal to emotion, which oftentimes fail to deliver on its aims. Watchers and listeners to poems are likely to get conscious of this and would not want to fall prey to such antics of a poet to evoke their emotion artificially.

  1. Use metaphor and simile: Being able to use imagery and concrete ideas to express your thought is very important. It helps to create a mental picture of an object or its qualities as being either present in or like a subject of discourse.Metaphor and simile can do their bit but it is good to strike a balance in their usage.

  1. Use Images: This suffices to say that words or expressions that appeal to the senses are needful to engage the audience in a mind game that they can relate with.

  1. Use concrete words instead of abstract: It is advisable to use concrete words other than the abstract ones. This is to help the poet’s audience appreciate the oration better. Concrete nouns like orange, stone can be easily taken in other than abstract nouns such as happiness, love, etc which may tune in different impression to individuals in the audience.

  1. Communicate theme: This is necessary because there is need to make a statement of fact that connects an event or series of events instead of just a topic or subject. It helps show what the poet’s or writer’s opinion is.

  1. Subvert the ordinary: For poets to do something inspiring, then they have to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways. And this mean, they have to free themselves from the general norm, so as to come out with not-too-common creativity.

  1. Rhyme with extreme caution: Rhyme is not forbidden in poetry. It is a feature of poem but caution should be ensured in order not to defeat the aim of the poem.

  1. Revise, revise and revise: This is to allow for editing. The work is not done yet at the first draft but time should be committed to getting the finest of the lump. Meaning that when effort is set in for a proof of the first draft a couple of times, it eliminates any hidden roughages capable of marring the poem and its presentation.
